In case you missed the fine print in today's earlier post about the OS 10.3 SDK, there were a few things that should be noted to clear up any confusion. While we all anxiously await the arrival of OS 10.3 and all that comes along with it, we won't be seeing it for a few more months still — but it won't be limited to just new BlackBerry devices.

The OS itself is still a ways off, but it's always good to have something to look forward to, right?

We're getting a BlackBerry 10 update today. And no, it's not OS 10.3. It's a 10.2.1 update that brings a few new enhancements and features to your BlackBerry 10 smartphone. We actually saw this OS version drop as a leak early in the month of May. If you're one who prefers to load officially, then look out for the update as it will be rolling out today for all BlackBerry 10 devices.

New features in OS 10.2.1.3175

  • Applications - No more limits on the number of applications that can run in the background.
  • Support for 64GB and higher exFAT MicroSD so you can store and enjoy more photos, music and files to your BlackBerry 10 device.
  • Enhancements to Bluetooth, Media, Browser, and more!

The update will show as Software version 10.2.1.2941 but it is OS version 10.2.1.3175. As usual, this update is carrier dependent and the rollout for the update starts today.

  • Europe Middle East and Africa – Starting May 27
  • Asia Pacific : Starting May 27
  • Canada: Starting May 27
  • Latin America: Starting mid-June
  • USA: We expect availability starting late-June

Some carriers in the U.K. have already rolled out the update. Are you seeing this update in other regions? Let us know in the comments.

Leaked: OS 10.2.1.3247 for most BlackBerry 10 smartphones

If you've been gone digging through the CrackBerry Forums then you know the rumored, next official release noted is 10.2.1.3247 and it's supposedly in the hands of carriers for testing right now. Rather than waiting for carriers to push it out though, you can grab the autoloaders right now for most BlackBerry 10 devices. So, what devices are the list working list?

The BlackBerry Q5, Q10 along with the BlackBerry Z30 and Z3. The only exception here is the BlackBerry Z10. Unlike a lot of other leaks where the STL100-1 is excluded, this release sees STL100-1 as the only Z10 version supported. Someone can likely build an autoloader for all other Z10 versions but for now, STL100-1 only.

As always, be sure to perform a full backup using BlackBerry Link before you install any OS. Check out our full tutorial on using an autoloader here and don't hold us responsible should anything go bad — though you can always reload your OS. If you want to know what has changed, what's new then head on into the CrackBerry Forums and discuss it some more.

At this point, there's not a whole lot of info about the changes in the OS other than what is noted in the change log that states it covers security enhancements for some Enterprise customers with specific requirements. The majority of users can't wait for the BlackBerry Assistant

A few days ago we ran a poll asking how excited you are for the BlackBerry Assistant that we'll get when BlackBerry 10.3 gets released into the wild and also comes pre-installed on the BlackBerry Passport.

To be honest, I wasn't quite sure which way this one would swing. I know that iOS and Android users have been rocking Siri and Google Now for some time - and Windows Phone has just got there own assistant with Cortana, but traditionally us BlackBerry users are workhorses with our thumbs.

With any new release of an operating system it's the big new features that normally get all the attention and that's perfectly understandable. However, it's also the little improvements that help the whole experience and BlackBerry 10.3 has plenty of those.

When it comes to OS updates for the BlackBerry Passport, Rogers seems to be leading the pack. They were the first carrier to roll out an update before the device was fully officially announced and now they've gone ahead and released another. Now appearing on Passports is software update v10.3.0.908 otherwise known as OS v10.3.0.1418.

The update doesn't really specify what has changed, but folks in the CrackBerry Forums are already digging through it. Of course, you don't really need to be on Rogers to receive the update either. The files are available for loading yourself if you wish and if you hold out a bit later, I'm sure some autoloaders will be created.

Recently we published a poll asking CrackBerry readers if 'you use a custom BBM PIN'. Yesterday, BlackBerry started seeding OS 10.3.2.281 to those who are a part of the BlackBerry 10.3 beta program and as always, a few hours later the files started appearing for everyone to download. First they appeared for the BlackBerry Passport, then the BlackBerry Z30 and BlackBerry Classic and now that the beta has landed in the hands of even more folks, so have the files for several other devices including the Z10 (No STL100-1) Q5, Q10. As the OS has been 'out there' and kinda 'leaked' since yesterday, there's already a full change log for it from BlackBerry plus, whatever other stuff those who already have it installed have found.
